The Baltimore Orioles weren’t always known by their current name. The franchise originally began as the Milwaukee Brewers, one of the eight charter members of the American League when it was founded in 1901. The team then relocated to St. Louis, where they spent 52 years as the St. Louis Browns before finally moving to Baltimore in 1954 and adopting the Orioles name, inspired by Maryland’s state bird.
While the franchise dates back to 1901, the modern-era Orioles were truly reborn in 1954. Nicknamed the "O’s" or simply "The Birds", the team had its first World Series appearance as the Browns in 1944, where they fell short against their St. Louis rivals, the Cardinals. However, it was in the 1960s and 1970s that the Orioles rose to dominance, led by legendary players like Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Cal Ripken Jr., and Eddie Murray, all under the leadership of manager Earl Weaver.
Since 1992, the Orioles have played their home games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a stadium that revolutionized modern ballpark design. Camden Yards was the first of the "retro-classic" stadiums, blending modern amenities with old-school charm, setting a standard that many teams followed.
With fierce rivalries against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, the Orioles continue to have one of the most passionate fan bases in baseball, known as "Birdland." But what truly sets the Orioles apart is "The Oriole Way"—a system built on fundamentals, smart strategy, and elite player development, a philosophy that has shaped their legacy for decades.
