The Boston Red Sox are one of the eight founding teams of the American League, dating back to 1901. They are one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball, boasting a rich history, legendary players, and intense rivalries.
Originally known as the Boston Americans, the team officially adopted the name "Red Sox" in 1908, inspired by their red stockings. However, since "Red Stockings" was already associated with the Cincinnati Reds and "Sox" with the Chicago White Sox, Boston’s team became famously known as The Sox, The BoSox, or simply The Red Sox.
The Red Sox have built a legendary legacy with players like Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Pedro Martínez, David Ortiz ("Big Papi"), Manny Ramírez, Dustin Pedroia, Mookie Betts, and many others. By 1918, they had already won five World Series titles, establishing themselves as a dominant force in baseball. However, this success was followed by one of the most infamous droughts in sports history: "The Curse of the Bambino."
According to legend, the "curse" began after the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919. What followed was an agonizing 86-year championship drought filled with heartbreak, near-misses, and crushing defeats, while the Yankees went on to become the most successful franchise in baseball. The curse was finally broken in 2004, when the Red Sox made history by overcoming a 3-0 deficit against the Yankees in the ALCS—becoming the first team in MLB history to complete such a comeback—and then sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series. The magic didn’t stop there, as the Sox went on to win four championships in the 21st century (2004, 2007, 2013, 2018).
The Yankees remain the Red Sox's fiercest rival, forming one of the most intense rivalries in all of sports. But beyond that, the Sox also have notable rivalries with the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and St. Louis Cardinals. These rivalries are fought out in the iconic Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Since opening in 1912, Fenway has been the heart and soul of Red Sox Nation, famous for its Green Monster left-field wall, rich traditions, and electric atmosphere, making every game an unforgettable experience.
