Originally known as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, the Cardinals are one of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball. The team officially adopted the Cardinals name in 1900, inspired by their cardinal red trim and striped socks, which became a defining part of their uniform.
Founded in 1882, the Cardinals played in the American Association (AA) until 1891, when the league collapsed. They then joined the National League in 1892. With 11 World Series championships—second only to the New York Yankees—the Cardinals have cemented themselves as one of the most successful and decorated franchises in baseball history. Their legacy is filled with legendary players, dramatic moments, and an enduring tradition of excellence, overcoming countless challenges over the years.
With iconic players like Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Albert Pujols, Lou Brock, and Yadier Molina, the Cardinals have built a reputation for strong pitching, disciplined hitting, and smart player development. Their success spans multiple generations, with Busch Stadium, their home since 2006, becoming a sea of red as devoted fans pack the stands.
Known for their deep knowledge of the game and unwavering passion, Cardinals fans have earned the nickname "Best Fans in Baseball" (BFIB). They stand by their team through thick and thin, especially in their legendary rivalry with the Chicago Cubs. This feud—known as the Cubs-Cardinals Rivalry or "The Route 66 Rivalry"—has lasted for over a century and remains one of the most passionate matchups in MLB history. However, the Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnati Reds, and Los Angeles Dodgers also rank among the Cardinals' biggest rivals.
